HEY VICTORIANS!

Do you feel all warm and fuzzy when you see animals? Always wanted to help those poor abused or abandoned pets reported on the news but never knew how to? Have a vision of stopping animal cruelty once and for all in Singapore? Or are you a kind-hearted soul, always wanting to volunteer and help others?

If your answer is YES to any of the above, good news because VJC PAWS (Pets and Animals Welfare Society) is recruiting! And we need YOU to help us in this long and arduous journey to prevent animal cruelty and increase awareness of this issue to others out there!

You can expect countless opportunities to get up close and personal with animals at various shelters, collaborations with animal welfare organisations like SPCA, ACRES and Singapore Zoo, and voluntary work at animal events like the recent World Animal Day! Of course, this also means CIP HOURS up for grabs!

World Animal Day!

Hello! :D

SPCA is celebrating World Animal Day this October!

They’ll be having it at the East Coast Park D1 Dalbergia Green area on the 10 October, Sunday.

We have been invited to join them in the event and get a booth space to formulate activities and games for the children that will come to our celebrations that day.

For more information about puppy mills, you can visit Google, YouTube or let us know what you need from us and we’ll try to provide.

Some ideas you can consider would be:
- Face-and-hand painting

- Games (jigsaw/crossword puzzles, funfair type of games, etc)
- Etc

Let me know your group’s interest and we can work closely together if you’re keen. =)

Volunteering at ACRES

Hey PAWsians! :D

ACRES will be holding a special Volunteer Day on the 12^th June (NEXT SATURDAY) at the AWRC (ACRES Wildlife Rescue Centre, 91 JalanLekar). They have invited us to come and volunteer. (: It's from 10am to 4pm, so those interested in can SMS any of the EXCO and do indicate the times you are free! An SMS has already been sent out by Janeal. (:

They need:

20 volunteers to assist with preparing animal masks for our educational programmes;
30 volunteers to assist with gardening;
10 volunteers to assist with cleaning.

We intend to go for the gardening and animal masks thingy as a group, as indicated in the SMS. Do bring along vegetarian food/snacks, a hat, sun block and insect repellent. Cold drinks are available from the vending machine, with part of the proceeds going to ACRES.

Hey people, here are the pictures of our green notice board! Okay, the third one is just for laugh.

The money for the fund raising event has been returned to SPCA and ACRES. As for the profits from fondue, we have decided to give it to Ericsson Pet Farm. Probably buying dog food from Mutts, so that Mutts can earn $$.

There won't be a meeting this coming Tuesday 20th April because the time slots on Tuesday will be used for interviewing those who have submitted the EXCO application forms.

Hey all,

There won't be any meeting for next Tue, 2nd March, as the JC2s have to prepare for their CT and also the following week, 9th March. (CT itself.)

However, there will be a trip to Mutts and Mittens this Saturday, 27th Feb, for all those who could not come last weekend. Please meet at Pasir Ris Mrt Station at 12pm on that day.
As for those who came last week, take note that this is an optional trip for you guys. We will be bringing you all to Ericsson Pet Farm (very near Mutts) if you all come on that day. Please also meet at the same time and venue.

Next, I have sent you guys 4 emails. Please check your VJC mail inbox regarding the activities for March hols and this Sat's trip. Attached in the mails is the contact list for all PAWS members and the proposal we sent to SPCA regarding the activities we are organising there during March hols.

Lastly, the attendance so far has been great, so keep up the good work! Also, hope the documentary which you all had seen last meeting was inspiring.

This Sat and Sun, we will be going to Mutts and Mittens.
Please meet at Pasir Ris Mrt Station at 1.45pm.

Help Shiny find a new home

Shiny, a mongrel we found abandoned last year, was adopted by my uncle's family but he and my uncle do not get along at all. My uncle has over the past few months threatened to send Shiny to SPCA many times, but on Mon 18 Jan 2010, he actually did call them to take him away, after Shiny bit him. On my mum's appeals, he has consented to retract his call and postpone Shiny's death sentence by a week.

Our friend is trying to see if NANAS can take him in; ASD unfortunately can't. Please help by forwarding this to anyone whom you think can offer Shiny a good, loving home. Despite his size (not suited for HDB flats), bark and exuberance, he has an amiable nature if not treated with animosity. For instance, he allowed me and another stranger to lead him up to our flat last year. With care and obedience training, he will make a loyal friend and watchdog.

Zoo Wildlife Buddies Programme ended last week. Now we are working on Pet of the Year 2009. With promos coming, a lot of time management is needed.
Anyway, these are the feedback results from the Zoo Wildlife Buddies Programme.

Some updates before June Hols

Hello. We had released the terrapins into their natural habitat.

We felt that the terrapins did not have freedom as they couldn't swim continuously for more than 2 seconds in the tank. Moreover, when I went to the pet shop that day to buy some more food, the pet owner told me that they needed to be exposed to direct sunlight and that their water must preferably be chlorine-free. Also, the larger terrapin had grown until the new tank seemed a little small for it. I guess it's only a matter of time before we have to release them anyway. In addition, it can be unpleasant for them if we keep passing the tank among one another, especially when they keep hitting against the tank.

We had released them into the Chung Cheng High School (Main)'s lake. The teachers agreed on it. As for whether they would survive there, the lake has many tortoises and the cleaners from the school usually throw bread into the lake to feed them. I cannot guarantee their survival, but I can say that it's the best place I can find for them after knowing the lake for 4 years.

One interesting thing to note is that upon releasing the larger terrapin, it swam straight into the lake but swam up again to look at us before diving back into the water. It can be a coincidence, but I would rather think that it's grateful that it finally has freedom?

PAWS is currently preparing for the ZOO Wildlife Buddy Programme. The greatest difficulty we are facing now is to search for a primary school that is willing to let its students take part in the tour. Really hopes it works out well...or else it's really a waste of one month of effort.

As for what we have done/ are doing,

1. Redecorate the notice board
2. Set rules and goals
3. Continue with the pet shelter, facebook and blog stuffs.
4. PAWS foolscap will be on sale in sch bookshop after June hols.
5. Approached CWS.
I have sorted out 32 activities that can be implemented in these 2 years.

Singapore Animal Welfare Symposium 2009

Went to Singapore Animal Welfare Symposium 2009 with Kai Ren today. =)
Speakers came from ACRES, NSS, AVA, SPCA, SSCS, Lovesharks.com, CWS and ASD.
They discussed issues like wildlife in entertainment and domestic animal welfare. It was a good experience =).

These were some of the points mentioned.

-Some said that the dolphins are only fed after they have performed. Others said likewise as they think that the dolphins will not be in such a good shape during performances if they are really starving.

-AVA noted that the local supply of puppies(from breeding) is insufficient to meet the excess demand. As for the dogs that go to SPCA, many are from irresponsible pet owners whom abandon them.

-ASD pointed out that there's a big difference between a stray cat and a stray dog. For example, think about how you will react differently for a stray dog and a stray cat in the middle of Orchard Road.

-There are like 10 000 plus wild dogs in Singapore though we seldom come across them. Most are located in Tuas, Jurong Industrial Estate. They live in fear each day. Nobody will know even if they are knocked down by a car.

-AVA gives licensing and HDB gives advice but neither is able to stop a pet owner who insists in keeping a cat/dog at home. A weakness in the system.

-It is illegal to keep stray cats in HDB flat. But nothing will happen even if you keep one unless someone complains about it.

-Now the government is starting to tackle these animal issues. The animal organisations believe that the talks they gave in the past to the Primary School students were useful as these people have grown up and some are working in the government sector...have more say or authority.

-Possible to voice your concerns to a MP. More voices...as they are quite used to SPCA and others. Less chances of saying the same things(to SPCA) to you.

-CWS is trying to persuade the government to allow cats to be kept in HDB flats.

All the best to the 08 batch seniors who had contributed to PAWS in one way or another. Add oil in your academics and other areas! You people really put in a lot of effort for this cca =).

Here are some updates of PAWS.
Right now we are discussing some dry stuffs. Mr Yong wants us to have a new mission(probably the current one will be removed. Sorry!!!), some rules for meetings, set goals, plan activities...
We will be changing the layout of the noticeboard soon. Hopefully it catches more attention. =)The location of our noticeboard is good because Victorians can see it when they walk up the staircase. XD

And finally, finally...after all this admin things are finished, I believe we can start planning and implementing activities.

A good start would be to form close partnerships with more animal organisations as this can boost the "importance" of our CCA.

Haha I think I'm going into too much details. Anyway, I think that's about it. Will update more next time. =)

By the way, Kairen and I will be going to the Animal Symposium at NUS ~~tomorrow~~ today. Hope to get some good photos and share it on blog. =)

How to go:

Step 1: Buses that go to the 'Furry Pets' Pet shop. Buses from VJC are 31, 43, 76, 135, 197. Take them at Neptune Court Bus stop. It takes about 15 mins.

Step 2: Alight when you see Donut Factory at the left or Caltex on your right.

Step 3: Walk along the flow of traffic for a distance and cross the traffic light.

Step 4: Walk towards the row of shophouses and Furry Pets is directly opposite SPC Petrol Station.

Step 5: Furry Pets!!

Hi everyone,

Had fun at today's meeting ;) Today we got to talk to each other more whilst discussing some measures we could take to increase awareness in the school about the issues of animal skinning and domestic abuse. Some interesting suggestions came up, and those which would be implemented are here: setting up a facebook account relating to PAWS, and through this promote an awareness of such issues. To raise publicity, we could wear gory makeup on our arms that look like the scars on abused animals. That's quite cool right? Interesting and original, if we could do that it'd be really eye-catching. Well, this is just to keep you guys in on what's happening or is going to happen soon in PAWS, remember to check back for more!

Hi everyone, it was a great meeting today ;) i'm sure that we gained lots of information about animal abuse from the talk today didn't we? Anyway for those who couldn't go, some of the things we discussed were the exploitation of animals in commercial activities and poor domestic care of pets.

China Fur trade

Some of the animals in China such as dogs and cats are captured and transported to fur-producing factories. This horrifying act is carried out whilst the animal is still ALIVE because fur traders believe the fur produced is softer. For up to ten minutes after the skinning, these animals are still conscious and in pain before finally dying. Worse, they are often bashed on the ground to break their bones before their skinning, right before their other animal friends who can only await their gruesome end. It's very sad and very inhumane. Sometimes, dogs and cats may not be the true 'animals' at all.

Bonsai kittens

Another practice is that of selling 'bonsai kittens'. For profit, unscrupulous merchants inject kittens with a bone-softening substance before putting them into glass bottles to be treated as ornaments. And the kittens are still alive! They can't move, but only blink their eyes, and some customers find this amusing. This repulsive act exists because sellers reap very large amounts of money for a single 'ornament'. A Christmas bauble can fetch over $150! It is ridiculous to promote such an act and it ought to be abolished. Don't you agree?

Lab animals

This striking poster illustrates what animals undergo for the sake of the cosmetics and skincare products that humans enjoy using. Thousands of animals undergo horrific lab tests, even though it is illegal and banned by countries like Singapore. Needless to say, things don't always go as they should and in other countries, such experiments are merely carried out secretly.

Starvation

Pet owners don't always take as good care of their pet as they should. This dog was found almost dead from starvation due to neglect, and it is obvious that the owner simply did not care enough to give it meals even though it was so starved. Pet owners, do take care of your pets and feel proud that they're in the care of someone like yourself ;)

Here're some of the things that may be implemented soon, as suggested by fellow PAWS ambassadors:
1) Government petitions against the use of fur/animal abuse
2) Abstain from products which require animal parts
3) For those who can, go vegetarian!
4) Watch out for the neighbourhood auntie who likes to keep an army of cats. It's called 'hoarding' and it's not good for either your neighbourhood nor the cats!
5) Be responsible for your pet, and report animal abuse if you find out about such an occurrence

Singapore Zoo Community Day

The Singapore Zoo will be having a community day in December and are inviting us to assist them!

They will be working with "Very Special Arts" and about 30 to 40 students from the VWO will be coming to participate in ceramic tiles making.

Hope you guys had fun that day! Honestly, in my entire life I've never seen so many dogs all in one day!

Like maybe the 2nd last photo! Omg isn't the cat so cute!!! HAHA and it looks so professional, postcard-like doesn't it! HAHAHA or maybe the UTT one (w/ the dog) too! It was really a great, FUN, fulfilling day, where you actually get to interact with all the dogs&cats other pple bring (the place was flooded with dogs...and the owners don't mind if you take photos/touch them etc at all!) , not to mention all for a wonderful cause...well if you didn't feel that it was a "loss" at all...hmm maybe this CCA isn't really suitable for you? HELLO, animal lovers??

Following the wonderful turnout by supporters at last year's celebrations at the East Coast Park, we will be celebrating World Animal Day there again this year!

Same place, same time - we're having the festivities near East Coast Park's Marine Cove!

So, come join us!

World Animal Day is a day where animal lovers acknowledge and give thanks for the way in which animals enrich our lives. Also, we take a moment to think of all those animals that still need our help.

We are taking this chance to spread the messages of being kind to animals and being a responsible pet owner. These are very important issues because right now, we take in more than 800 unwanted animals (pets and strays) each month.

Star appearance!
Utt ( MTV VJ) will be making an appearance at our celebrations from 12.30pm to 2.30pm. He'll be on stage introducing three of our SPCA dogs that will be up for adoption, and will be talking about how to adopt a pet from us and save a life! Afterwards, you'll be able to buy an SPCA poster for $2 and Utt will autograph it especially for you.

Stand up for whale sharks
Whale sharks are majestic creatures, known as the gentle giants of the sea. Find out more about whale sharks and why the SPCA is against the importation and display of these creatures at the Integrated Resort on Sentosa. Don't forget to purchase a specially designed T-shirt, priced at only $6. This new T-shirt is aimed at increasing awareness and spreading the message that whale sharks should not be kept in captivity.

Exhibition
A showcase of our work at the SPCA, including the sterilisation of pets, information about animal abuse and tips on responsible pet ownership.

Find an animal to adopt
Pictures of animals currently up for adoption at our shelter will be on display at our pet-care area. Open your hearts and give one of our furry friends a home.

National Parks Board
More than a thousand different animals reside on our tropical island and many of them can only be found in our nature reserves. As we celebrate World Animal Day, the National Parks Board would like to share with you how you can help protect our natural heritage so that the nature reserves can continue to be a safe haven for the animals. You can help in the following ways:
- think again before you release animals into the wild
- do not feed monkeys
- leave your pets at home when you visit nature reserves

In addition, National Parks will share information on their regular, free guided walks at Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and Central Catchment Nature Reserve.

A play by Underground Theatre entitled The Crow's Lament

Little Boy Blue, an avid animal lover, has also been tricked into the secret lair, but soon comes up with a wonderful plan to help all the innocent animals escape. Proud of your furry friend and how well you've taken care of him? Show him off by taking part in our Best Kept Pet Contest at 12pm (registration starts at 11.30am).

Think your doggie pal can wag its tail really fast? Sign up for the tail-wagging contest at 2pm. The audience will decide if your dog is the winner! (Registration starts at 1.30pm.)

Hey!

Here's something fun for us to do :

Recently, someone donated a bunch of T shirts to the SPCA & they need our help in decorating them!

All we have to do is head down to the SPCA & paint the shirts. (don't need to bring anything, they'll be providing us with the fabric paints! )

& even if you don't have a flair for craft work, or is allergic to paint, you should still go! There's always the pet shelter :D (For those of y'all who don't know, it's this area in SPCA where you can go in & play with the dogs & cats! You don't have to wait for SPCA staff to let you in or anything, you can just go in by yourself. yup, so, it's a great chance to interact with animals! )

Okay, so sms Yirong the days you're free for next week & the week after that, so that we can group y'all into small groups :D
( By "free", I mean that you have nothing on after school, and is released at least by 2.30pm)

Next, we're currently planning the "Pet of the year 2008" contest :D We're opening it to the whole school^^. It's really simple, you just have to send in a photo of your pet & then through our selection, the top ten will be chosen & then victorians can vote for the cutest pet (most probably through e-voting)! The winner will get prizes and free publicity (we'll paste posters of the pet around the school) :D

You guys will be splitted into 2 comms, one in charge of the prizes & one doing the promotion video. Will tell yall more about it during our next meeting ^^

Duty roster for 14 - 18 Apr

See the red dots next to ONE name/class under EACH 35 min shift? The people who have red dots next to their names are VERY VERY VERY IMPORTANT because they are IN CHARGE of that shift. ie,

1. They are responsible for Zong Rui's laptop, which will be placed in the canteen so the powerpoint promoting the fundraising can be played on the canteen projector. If the laptop goes missing during YOUR shift, you will be in deep shit.

2. They are in charge of taking attendance for each shift. Just put a tick next to the name in the duty roster if the person is present for the shift. The hard copy of the duty roster will be at the booth in a clear red file, along with other stuff (will elaborate later in this post).

3. They are to take careful note of the quantity of merchandise (from the animal welfare organisations) sold during that shift. Every time an item from a particular society is sold (be it CWS, ASD, HRSS or SPCA), make a note in the respective inventory list under QUANTITY SOLD. The 4 inventory lists will be in the clear red file.

I'll highlight the I/Cs for each shift on the hard copy of the duty roster as well. I/Cs reading this, please make a note of the shifts you're in charge of.

The clear red file contains:

- 4 merchandise inventory lists, one for each animal society

Susmitha is in charge, seeing as how she's the only J1 who seems confident of baking. Susmitha has the power to make anyone give up their home oven so she can go to your house to bake. She can also gather as large a group of J1s as she wants to test out the recipes for the cookies, brownies & honey cornflakes cup.

Cookie recipe will be, apparently, authentic Subway cookie recipe, provided by Melissa. Whether it is authentic or not, I have no idea, but Susmitha & the J1s will tell us by 13th Apr.

Susmitha: I will email you more details, together with the cookie recipe, by Friday night. Do check your email and assemble a party of J1s, congregate somewhere and bake :)

Silin & Zong Rui: I will email you both by Friday night as well with more details.

If you're new to this blog, or have not been reading the past entries, please go read the previous entries to get an idea of what's going on. We're working on a tight schedule so I'd need a list of names of people who ARE attending the workshop (together with your class and contact number), by the end of this week! Hopefully.

But now what we should all be concerned with is our ANNUAL FUNDRAISING from 14 to 18 April. We will be collecting merchandise from other animal welfare organisations (SPCA, ACRES, CWS, ASD etc) and selling them at a booth in the canteen during that week. In addition, we will be selling hand-made merchandise and fooooooood (possible link-up with the Culinary Club, because we have connections ie. Xinru hahaha). We will need to make A LOT OF MONEY so we can send everyone off on these activities we are organising (the zoo is super profit-oriented one, I tell you. SUPER). And to make A LOT OF MONEY we will need VERY GOOD IDEAS. To come up with VERY GOOD IDEAS we will need to BRAINSTORM VERY HARD. Hence, we're meeting up ONCE EVERY WEEK after the Mar hols all the way to 14 Apr, instead of the usual once every 2 weeks.

If this is the first time you're visiting this blog, please start reading your way up from the post on 5 Feb before coming back to this entry :)

Next week 26 Feb there will be NO PAWS meeting because the J2s will be in the midst of SPAs and preparation for common tests. The first combined meeting with both J1s and J2s in Term 2 will be on the Tuesday after the the J1 common test week, which means it will be 25 March, 5.30pm at the maths resource room.

However, this does NOT mean you will not be involved in any PAWS activities until then :)

The Wildlife Buddies workshop will be held on 13 & 14 March during the Mar hols and initially, I had planned for only the J2s to take part in the programme and for the J1s to do the SPH Conservation Ambassador Programme which requires a longer period of committment. However it turns out the minimum number of people needed to attend the 2-day workshop for the Wildlife Buddies workshop is 40. There are only 15 J2s in total, and so far 2 of them already cannot make it (J2s, upon reading this if you suddenly realise you cannot make it TELL ME ASAP OKAY), so that's like 13. I'm recruiting non-PAWS members and so far I've got 6 other confirmed J2s, and I've spread the word and told the exco to go look for interested parties, but this means we'll still need about another 15 - 20 people.... so...

J1s! We are appealing to you to sign up for this programme too :):):) I know the workshop will be held during the mar hols when you all are supposed to be mugging for your tests, but it's only 2 days and each day's session will only be 3 hours. The days when we actually make a trip to the zoo with the organisation we are liasing with will be on a Sat, confirmed after your common tests, so no worries there.

If we cannot make up the number of 40, we won't be able to go for the workshop at all -.-

And bear in mind the CIP hours! The experience! Can put in your testimonial (like, if you join PAWS then nothing to say about what you did during the 2 years a bit weird right)! ~~Getting into the exco's good books!~~

So yes, if you're thinking about the pros and cons of joining, DON'T THINK, just JOIN with the people whom you signed up with (if you do have a friend or two whom you signed up together with lah. If not, well, make new friends!) and do it :D

ACTIVITIES WITH THE ZOO!

Hello you all! No PAWS today nor next week, but for J2s, the first PAWS session of Term 2 will be on 18 Mar.

J1s, you guys will need to meet next week, on 26 Feb, as per normal. That session will be a compulsory session, because you guys need to start brainstorming for our annual fundraising in early/mid-April. I'll give you guys the details by this weekend.

Done? Here's to recap:

SPH Conservation Ambassador Programme (CAP):

- 2 full days of training on the 3rd and 17th of May, followed by

- 6 service sessions to the zoo (likely to be held end of May and early June), during which the graduates from the programme as CONSERVATION AMBASSADORS will act as guides to visitors at selected exhibits (including Fragile Forest, Australian Outback, White Tiger exhibits etc).

- COMPLETION OF PROGRAMME! You are now a Conservation Ambassador :) Many CIP hours! Free admission to the zoo! Can brag to your friends about how cool the zoo was! Much much fun! :D

SPH Wildlife Buddies Programme (WBP):

- a 2-day workshop on any 2 weekdays (done during the Mar hols - the tentative dates picked out by the exco are the 13th and 14th of March. But we'll try to fit in 2 groups of trainings so that those who can't make it then will have other available dates)

- each day's session is 3 hours

- participants will be groomed to explain animal exhibits (including Fragile Forest, Australian Outback, White Tiger exhibits etc) to visitors, after which

- the participants of the workshop (lol WILDLIFE BUDDIES) will liase with an external organisation (we're sending out emails to some orphanages and child care centers) by bringing them over to the zoo to explain to them the exhibits, and hence carry out our duty as a WILDLIFE BUDDY (haha sorry I just think this is quite funny). It's like our Service Learning Venture (SLV) in J1. This trip to the zoo with them will be done on either the 22nd or 29th of March, both Sats.

- Once again: Many CIP hours! Free admission to the zoo! Can brag to your friends about how cool the zoo was! And how pro you are to be doing such honourable things for animals! Much much fun! :D

However, because the CAP training sessions are on 3 & 17 May, and the subsequent service sessions will have to be from late May to early June, Mrs Long and the exco think that only the J1s should participate in CAP, because J2s should spend more time on preparation for the mid years. J2s will instead do the WBP, which will likely end before March.

ARE YOU DYING TO SIGN UP??? I mean, participation is not COMPULSORY, but DO remember why you joined PAWS in the first place. The chance to INTERACT WITH ANIMALS (EXOTIC ONES! Like snakes. And white tigers. Muahaha) and well, play a part in actually helping them? We're not a hardcore animal welfare organisation rahrah-ing for animal rights, but the aims of our society DO include ensuring the proper and better treatment of animals (conservation of animals issues, very important), and encouraging more volunteer work with animal welfare organisations. Personally I think it all sounds rather exciting, PLUS we get to go to the zoo free (:D:D:D I mean, now must pay 16 dollars leh!), and it will certainly be an eye-opener, AND doubtlessly we'll learn loads of new things!

Um, and the CIP hours don't hurt either. And the fact that you can wax lyrical in your testimonial end of the year about taking part in these programmes. (J1s, it's time to plan ahead! Or else you might be stuck desperately trying to come up with things to say in your testimonial end of your J1 year. Just a helpful reminder :D)

Lastly, here's one more activity we're having with the zoo. This one is called the Zoo Goes to School -.-, and the representatives from the zoo will come to VJ and hold a session on conservation of wildlife with us. They'll be bringing one or two animals along :D:D and some stuffed animal specimens. However, they can only hold the session at 3pm. Can everyone email me the days on which they are free at 3pm to attend this session? My email is listed on the right hand bar of this blog.

SPH Conservation Ambassadors and Wildlife Buddies Programme 2006 -
Student volunteers guide underprivileged children on an "Aquatic Adventure"

Singapore, 8 June 2006 - 25 students from Orchid Park Secondary School today became conservation guides to children from welfare organisation Beyond Social Services, taking them on an “Aquatic Adventure” at Singapore Zoo.

The secondary three students have been trained as Wildlife Buddies under the SPH Conservation Ambassadors and Wildlife Buddies programme, an innovative student volunteer programme that helps children and youths spread the conservation message.

This “youth-for-youth” volunteer programme, into its second year, is sponsored by the Singapore Press Holdings (SPH).

Ms Fanny Lai, Executive Director of Singapore Zoo and Night Safari, said: “This is the first time the Singapore Zoo is extending the Wildlife Buddies Programme to disadvantaged children. We hope that the children will not only learn more about wildlife conservation but also enjoy the experience of interacting with children from other schools.”

“We are certainly grateful to SPH for their continued support of the programme. This programme is structured such that the pupils learn not only about flora and fauna but also social interaction, community responsibility and wildlife conservation, “ she added.

“Children are fascinated by animals, and the Singapore Zoo, which is transforming itself into a learning zoo, provides the ideal setting for this student volunteer programme,” said Ms Ginney Lim, Acting Executive Vice President, Corporate Relations of SPH.

“It brings children closer to nature and wildlife, and encourages them to make a positive contribution to the environment, which is under ever-increasing threat. We are proud to be sponsoring such a meaningful project,” added Ginney.

Since the programme’s launch last year, about 180 students from junior colleges and tertiary institutions have been trained as Conservation Ambassadors, acting as guides to visitors at selected exhibits. About 360 pupils underwent the Wildlife Buddies training programme to be conservation guides to their peers.

Besides the “Aquatic Adventure” module, the White Tiger and Fragile Forest are other available guided exhibits under the SPH Conservation Ambassadors and Wildlife Buddies programme. In addition, the Education Department of the Singapore Zoo also works closely with the various schools to design walking trails for students involved in the programme. These trails may include the above exhibits or other parts of the zoo.

SPH has been in partnership with the Wildlife Reserves Singapore on wildlife conservation for many years. The media group has adopted the SPH Conservation Centre and well-loved Inuka the polar bear since 1990. Through the SPH Conservation Centre, the highly-endangered proboscis monkeys from Borneo have thrived and have bred successfully in captivity.

MONEY! and volunteer work

We had our JTS on 20 July (I think it was 20 July) at Pizza Hut where 8 seniors enjoyed a free meal and stuffed their faces. Unfortunately, all our members must bear in the cost of their meal :( And the people who paid for the meal really want their money back.

So Xinru would like you guys to bring $4 to next Tuesday's meeting and voluntarily hand it to her, so she doesn't have to chase after you for money, which is terribly unglam. The seniors' meal cost about $65, there are 20 of us currently, and the additional amount you guys are paying will go to our currently-quite-empty treasury, so please don't think we're cheating your money!

Wynne emailed me a list of events that Acres and ASD are organizing and we have 2 in mind where we can help out at as a CCA:

This roadshow will raise awareness on the illegal wildlife trade in Singapore, bear farming and other animal protection issues. There will be exhibits on different animal welfare issues through informative educational panels and physical displays/replica models depicting the issues, for example toy animals crammed into crates showing how animals are smuggled for the illegal pet trade.

Fundraising activities:
Merchandise, including our hot-selling T-shirts ($15 each), mugs ($8 each) and colourful badges ($2 each) be sold. So spread compassion and wear a message!

Hi all PAWS members.

This blog was created so Cassandra doesn’t have to sms the 20 or so of us in PAWS whenever meeting dates are changed or to remind us to come down for meetings. You’re supposed to check this blog periodically for any CCA updates by the exco members. There’s also a list of things I need to make clear to you guys before the start of next term which is also the period where we all get busy for CCA Open House. But more about that later.

First and foremost, attendance. I know last week’s meeting was suddenly changed to Thursday and many of you were confused by smses sent by Xinru and Cassandra respectively about meeting dates. Our meeting date is NOT changed to Thursday. That was because we had to meet Selina from SPCA to discuss collaborative opportunities, and she couldn’t make it for Tuesday, so the exco decided to have it on Thursday instead. And I know many of you have other commitments, as I found out when I enquired about them earlier on, so it’s alright for missing that meeting. However, at the meeting before THAT meeting last week, a grand total of 4 people (excluding exco members) turned up. Sheesh. I really hope this incident doesn’t repeat itself for next Tuesday’s, because it’s quite an important meeting. We’re having an external speaker from Cat Welfare Society (CWS) who’s coming to hold a workshop on cat-catching (or the “Trap-Neuter-Return-Manage programme for community cats”). Also, there’s a lot I want to tell you guys about the things we’re doing for Open House and what direction PAWS is headed in. So please be there on Tuesday, Math Resource Room, 5.30pm.

Oh and maybe I’ll just write something about the meeting with Selina from SPCA (gosh, she’s like uber-friendly. No wonder PR personnel.). Basically she wanted us to help in educating the public. We can help them by inviting them down to give talks during assembly, exhibiting their placards and boards, things like that. The people present at the meeting then think it’d be great for us to have the exhibition and her speaking (she says she’ll bring down pets like they usually do at such events, because people are very drawn to the animals and the response to their event is also much better) on the day of the Open House on 6 Oct. We get to help them promote awareness, we also gain publicity as an active supporter of animal welfare societies. Win-win right. Of course, we need to ask the school if it’s feasible. Coincidentally, 7th October, the day after the Open House, is World Animal Day. We can take the chance to emphasize the significance of our activities (you know, in celebration of World Animal Day 2007. Feed the stray cats at your block today!) I’m also toying with the idea of having Selina come down on the 5th during assembly to give a brief speech, sort of as a prelude to our event. More details at our next meeting.

Those who signed up for the chance to interact with animals (and to gain CIP hours) doing volunteer work, fret not. Selina said we can’t really help them a lot volunteering-wise, as they already have a pool of volunteers who’s “been through the system”, like orientation and everything, to ensure they’re fully equipped with the necessary skills to take care of the pets and things like that. We’re more of the ad-hoc group. If turns out they need people to help out at events and their volunteers aren’t enough, they’ll call us up and off we go. The exco’s going to submit the names of all the members to Selina so she can email all of us at one go whenever she needs help, or when an event is being held. This will most likely take place during the holidays, and will be rather intermittent. Those who are really interested in regular volunteering, however, can sign up with Selina to be an official volunteer and “go through the system” and things like that. However, she warned that we need to be committed to it for at least 4 months once we start volunteering work, once a week. I can find out more for the interested parties.

Mr Chua suggested a possible zoo attachment at the end of the year and we think it’s a great idea! Wynne shall contact the zoo to enquire when she’s free  If we could make it an official partnership and have it on a twice a year basis during the respective holidays or something, it’ll be superb.

We’re also thinking of making cat catching and sterilizing them a signature activity for our CCA as well. I cannot stress how important this activity is in controlling the stray cat population in Singapore. Here’s an excerpt from CWS’s website:

"To Save Lives through Sterilisation"

We realise that the only way to help alleviate suffering and to stop so many cats being killed is to go to the root cause of the problem -- which is that of too many cats being born. In order to do this, we believe firmly in the need to focus on sterilisation.

To put it simply, the fewer cats born, the fewer cats suffer and die.
While we appreciate the work that people put into looking after cats in shelters, shelters are very expensive and time-consuming to run. In well-run shelters, the cats do have a good life, but only a tiny portion of the community cat population can go into a shelter. The rest are still out on the streets breeding and being killed.

We feel that if money and resources are channeled towards stopping the breeding by sterilisation, that there will be fewer cats in better health, fewer complaints and annoyances, and a better living environment for all -- whether or not you like cats.
To that end, we believe that by working with volunteers, town councils and management committees, we will be able to bring down the community cat population in an effective, humane way that works, which is through Sterilisation!

Lastly, to end off this post, I really do believe that our CCA HAS the potential to Make A Difference. That's so much we can accomplish as a CCA: it is really very simple for us to jumpstart an education programme for VJ (because our friends are all stuck with us annoying buggers, anyway, and have to listen to whatever we say), and so easy to act as a group to help these animal welfare organisations. I mean, all those websites listed on the right hand side are asking for volunteers, and here we are, this convenient source of manpower. Gosh there's so much we can do!!! Hahaha I hope I don't come off sounding overly fanatic. Maybe if I erase the 3 exclamation marks.
